What Size Should an OG Image Be?

1200 × 630 pixels is the safe default. That's a 1.91:1 ratio, which is what Facebook and LinkedIn recommend, and it displays well almost everywhere else. X (Twitter) crops large link previews closer to 2:1, so if most of your traffic comes from X, the 1200 × 675 option gives you a little more breathing room.

Keep your title and logo away from the edges either way. Messaging apps and some feeds show a cropped or square thumbnail, so turn on Show crop zones to see what survives the tightest crops.

Why Isn't My New Image Showing When I Share the Link?

Almost always, it's caching. Facebook, LinkedIn, and X save a copy of your link preview the first time anyone shares the URL, and they keep showing that copy for days or weeks. To force a refresh, run the URL through Facebook's Sharing Debugger and click Scrape Again, or use LinkedIn's Post Inspector.

If the debugger still doesn't show your image, check these:

  • The og:image URL is a full, absolute address starting with https://, not a relative path like /images/og.png.
  • The image actually loads when you paste that URL into a browser, and it isn't blocked by a login, a firewall, or your robots.txt.
  • The file is under 5 MB and is a JPG or PNG. These downloads are usually well under 1 MB.
  • Your SEO plugin and your theme aren't both printing og:image tags. When there are two, the network might pick the wrong one.

You can also check what a page is sending with our Meta Tag Extractor.

Should I Download a PNG or a JPG?

Use PNG for flat colors, gradients, and text, which covers most of these layouts. Use JPG when your image is mostly a photo, since it'll be a fraction of the size with no visible difference. The file sizes for both are shown under the preview.

How Do I Use This Image in WordPress?

You don't need to touch any code. Upload the image to your Media Library, then open the post in the editor. In Rank Math, go to the Social tab in the Rank Math panel; in Yoast SEO, open the Social section of the Yoast panel. Set the image for Facebook (which covers LinkedIn and most other sites too) and, if you like, for X. If you skip this, most SEO plugins fall back to the post's featured image.

Are My Logo and Photos Uploaded?

No. Images you add are read and drawn in your browser and never leave your device. Your text and design settings are remembered in your browser for next time, but your images aren't stored at all.
