What is E-E-A-T?
E-E-A-T stands for Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness. It's a framework that Google's Search Quality Raters use to evaluate content quality. Google added the extra "E" for Experience in December 2022 to emphasize that first-hand experience with a topic matters.
E-E-A-T isn't a direct ranking factor in the algorithm, but it reflects what Google's systems are trying to reward. Content that demonstrates strong E-E-A-T signals tends to perform better in search results, especially for YMYL (Your Money or Your Life) topics like health, finance, and legal advice.
What Does Each Letter Mean?
Experience refers to first-hand or life experience with the topic. Did the author actually use the product they're reviewing? Have they personally dealt with the situation they're writing about? Google wants to surface content from people who have been there and done that.
Expertise is about having the knowledge and skill to write accurately on a topic. For medical content, that might mean a doctor or nurse. For a recipe blog, it could just mean someone who cooks a lot and knows their way around a kitchen.
Authoritativeness looks at whether the author and website are recognized as go-to sources in their field. This includes things like being cited by others, having credentials, and building a reputation over time.
Trustworthiness is about accuracy, transparency, and legitimacy. Does the site have clear contact info? Are claims backed up with sources? Is the content honest and not misleading?
How Can I Improve My E-E-A-T?
Here are some practical ways to strengthen E-E-A-T signals in your content:
- Add detailed author bios that highlight relevant credentials, experience, and background.
- Include first-person language and personal anecdotes when you have real experience with the topic.
- Cite reputable sources and link to authoritative references.
- Keep content updated with publish dates and "last updated" timestamps.
- Make your contact information and about page easy to find.
- Get mentioned and linked to by other trusted sites in your niche.
- Be transparent about who you are and why you're qualified to write on the topic.
How Does This Tool Work?
