What is Keyword Density?
Keyword density is basically how often a specific word or phrase shows up in your content compared to the total word count. You calculate it by taking the number of times your keyword appears, dividing that by the total words, and then multiplying by 100 to get a percentage.
So if you have a 500-word article and your target keyword appears 10 times, that's a 2% keyword density (10 / 500 x 100 = 2%).
What is the Ideal Keyword Density for SEO?
There's not really a "perfect number" here, but most SEOs agree that somewhere between 1-2% is the sweet spot for your primary keyword. If you go above 3%, you're getting into territory where Google might flag it as keyword stuffing, which can actually hurt your rankings.
Search engines today are smart enough to understand context, synonyms, and related terms. So instead of obsessing over exact numbers, focus on writing naturally and just make sure your target keywords show up organically throughout your content.
Here's a rough guide to keep in mind:
- Below 1% means your keyword probably isn't prominent enough.
- 1-2% is the ideal range for most content.
- 2-3% is acceptable but you're getting close to the upper limit.
- Above 3% puts you at risk of a keyword stuffing penalty.

Why Analyze Multi-Word Phrases?
Long-tail keywords (that's just a fancy way of saying multi-word phrases) are often more valuable for SEO than single words. Here's why:
- They capture more specific search intent.
- They usually have less competition in search results.
- They tend to convert better because they're more targeted.
- They help search engines understand what your content is really about.
When you analyze 2-word and 3-word phrases, you can spot natural keyword clusters in your content and find opportunities to optimize for long-tail searches that you might have missed.
